With a warning from the captain, the last hours the temperatur had slowly increased on the plane. All to make sure their bodies adapted to the heat, so no one got a shock upon exiting.
Never been in a plane before, Neda wasn't sure if she ever wanted to get back in one. It was one of the big ones, so turbulens wasn't that easy to notice. And even if the trip was a long one, sims on board generally behaved nicely. Other than the usual two drunk dumbarses that kept harassing the flightpersonell, and the lady wearing way to much perfume.
As much as she'd love taking all the kids with her on vacation, it just hadn't been possible. It hadn't even been affordable. She didn't exactely struggle with simoleons, but she didn't have enough for to many large escapades; like vacations abroad.
She'd even lied to the kids and told them it was a job- thing, because she hadn't handled the thought of seeing the disappointment in their eyes.
As much as the captain had pretended that the increased heat on the plane would work, Neda strongly disagreed. She still thought she'd die on the ride to the small motel. The room was tiny, with two small single beds, a little dresser, and a bathroom they shared with another room. It wasn't a lot of catering there either, but she hadn't had any other option. This tiny place didn't exactely reek of five- star hotel quality. Atleast she had a view of some palms.
Are you sure you don't want to come with me? Neda asked Kevin again. They had decided to share a room for the few nights they were staying. It pretty much felt like she was his mother, so it wasn't exactely a big deal.
Yeah I'm sure. He answered again, pretending to be calm.
Because according to the airport and the busdriver, they'd seen a man who looked like him. She'd taken a picture of Niko with her ofcourse.
Still sure. He said, he felt nasceous, and didn't really want to hope to much. Anyone could look at an old picture of a man with dark hair and eyes, and think they'd seen him.
Kevin opened his book, and tried focusing on reading.
I'll go and ask a bit around at the marked. From what she assumed, most sims here spoke simlish, atleast the sellers at the market: And if I find something I'll let you know, okay?
Yeah, okay.
He waited until the door slammed shut, locking itself in the prosess, before putting the book down. Who was he fooling? A man that hadn't bothered even sending a card since he was born, and here he was looking for him? His dad knew where he was, he'd known where he was all the time. And yet he and his aunt was all the way in Egypt looking for him.
He was here, looking for his dad that didn't even want to be found. Ah well, what did he care.
Kevin had been so shocked when Neda had told she might know how to find atleast dad. On the way here he'd been so excited. But now that the busdriver had said he looked like a passengers of hers the other day, he was getting more and more irritated. Or, he thought he was irritated. Maybe he was just nervous, really. Nervous about seeing the disapointment on his face, or even worse; a fake happiness. Bet that would be it. Bet he'd pretend he wanted to meet him again, and then run off.
But, maybe he knew something about mum. And that could mean something, right? Maybe she would want him? On the other hand, she also had to have known where he was, and she didn't send a card either. Wonder why everyone got so strange when he'd asked about them. Grandma and grandpa had been really nice, but they'd started acting strange to when he asked about mum and dad; then they didn't answer. They were keeping something from him.
Kevin couldn't for the life of him figure it out. When he was younger he'd thought that his parents were actually dead, but Neda had insisted they weren't. So what on earth could it be? Could it be so simple that they just hadn't handled having a child? A lot of sims did that. Like, Sam was adopted. Well, her parents were dead and she didn't have any family, but the point still stood. Maybe he'd finally know what the whole deal was.
It was so warm that the air in the distance was unclear, and even the smallest gust of wind didn't exist. The small size of the marked; all of it hidden in a square, didn't exactely make things better.
Luckily there was small spots of shadow to hide in, and the tiny shops interior was cool compared to the outside. As lovely as the place was, Neda also did her best not to fall trap to the colours and architecture. She was here on a mission, not a vacation.
She wished for a second that she'd done some more research before coming all the way here, but quickly changed her mind when she saw a shop with tents outside. Even if she had no idea if Niko even was here, her asking at the other motel in this place had proved fruitless. So she did the next best thing; assume he was going to camp somewhere.
The lady behind the counted seemed friendly, so Neda did her best to make herself understood: Hi! She slapped on her sweetest smile; I'm looking for a friend of mine. We was supposed to meet here, but he doesn't answer his phone. Maybe you've seen him?
Neda showed the lady a picture she had on her phone, and hoped everything made sense to the poor lady. Turned out she had nothing to worry about, the clerks trader- simlish was a lot easier to understand then her own thick dialect.
Sorry. We don't get a lot of customers this time a year. It's a bit to hot for most sims. Yeah, Neda got that. The clerk continued after a little while: I would've remembered him if he came through here: he's cute.
Gross: Okay. Are there any other shop in the area that sells campinggear that you know about? Maybe someone has seen him there?
Sorry, we're the only store that deals these type of items. I can tell him you're looking if he shows up.
Ups, she hadn't thought about that: Oh, that's not necessary.
You know, the clerk said again: Are you sure he's camping? This isn't like the safest place to camp in the world. You know, there's the heat and crocodiles in the river and such. Maybe he's at that camp for all those weird... adventureres that shows up her. Looking to loot the pyramids usually, for some reason.
Well, he's quite experienced, Neda lied. She wasn't technically lying, she assumed he was. And yeah, she was well aware of crocodiles here, which was why she wasn't planning on going close to a river: Do you have a map of the area for sale maybe?
Sure. If he's not there, he might be near the riverside; at the sun- or mooncamp.
No riverside. Neda smiled.
You know, the crocodiles here aren't very big right? Just don't swim at noon or at night, and you'll be fine.
We don't really have anything like crocodiles where I live, so I think I'll avoid it. But thanks for the tip.
No way was she going anywhere where there were crocodiles. Why would she do that for? Besides, hadn't the lady just told her it wasn't a safe place to camp? And now it was suddenly okay to swim?
Well, the lady said again: How about I mark the camps on your map, together with the bigger one a short walk from here? I think there's a couple of freak... adventurers around there. Usually are.
Thanks, that would be great.
The camp probably hadn't been that far away from the market, but that hadn't helped alot since Neda ended up going in circles before finally finding the right way. Sand also wasn't the easiest thing to walk in, so she was glad she wore good footwear.
It didn't look quite as bad as she'd thought, but it looked deserted. Though, someone had to be there, because there were tents everywhere. She had to admit that she wasn't all to hopeful about finding Niko. Maybe he'd changed his travelplan and hadn't shared it with Jack, and she'd dragged Kevs with her all the way to Egypt for nothing. Well, if everything went well she'd take him a trip to Cairo before heading home.
After looking around a bit, and rudely opened the tents just to find them empty, Neda finally caught some poor chap leaving the bathrooms.
Excuse me! She interrupted him before he could even think about leaving. Sheesh, look at all those clothes. How come he didn't die of heat? She was just using sunblock 9000 or something like that. That, and she planned on keeping out of the sun.
He turned around at her approaching, not happy to see her.
From where she was standing now, Neda noticed some jeeps behind the small lavaratory, and some sims outside of them. If she was going to guess, they were either getting ready for an expediton, or they were getting back from one. Explained why the camp had been empty atleast.
Hi! I'm sorry to interrupt, but I'm looking for a friend of mine and I wondered if you might have seen him? Showing him a picture of her brother, he barely even looked at it before answering.
Sorry, haven't seen him. He answered with a hint of an accent she didn't recognize. Then again, Nedas language- ear wasn't the most developed.
Maybe you could look again? She showed the picture to him one more time before putting it away again: he might have changed his look.
Atleast he'd taken a look at the picture a bit longer this time before answering: nope, sorry lady.
Damnit. Maybe it was false assumptions then. She knew she shouldn't have gotten her hopes up.
Okay, thanks for your help. Uhm... good luck with your expedition.
You know lady, he interrupted her before she could leave: You could try talking to the expedition leader. He usually scouts the areas around here, so he knows the place a bit better. Maybe he has some ideas.
They had someone leading this joke of a group? Wow, she'd never guess: That would be great actually.
Before I go though, I have a few days off. Would you....
I have four kids! Nothing got guys backing up faster than that.
As expected, he nearly ran from her to fetch their expeditionleader, and Neda didn't even have to wonder of this was the guy. The pasty- white skin showed that he was more used to sitting in an office than beeing outside, and the equally soft hands witnessed that he'd never gotten his hands dirty in his life. Didn't he look a bit familiar though? Not as in that she knew him personally, but that she knew him from somewhere?
Hi! She ignored the bad feeling in her gut and tried beeing polite instead. Showing him the picture of Niko, Neda tried again: I'm looking for the guy in the picture. He's a good friend of mine.
It was something about him she knew. She just couldn't put her finger on it. Where did she know him from? Doing her best digging through her brain, she eventually figured it out: Alto. He had to be one of the Alto- brothers. It was the cheeckbones, faceshape, the entire colouring; and ofcourse; who else had the finances and contacts to pull of private expeditions in bloody Egypt. They weren't exactely welcoming of foreign- lead expeditions. Not surprisingly with how the world had treated their treasures.
Even if she wanted to find her brother, she kind of hoped this man didn't know him. Because if he was involved with the Alto- family, she had no idea what he'd gotten himself into.
Alto sounded surprisingly friendly for an Alto: What's his name?
Niko. For a short second she wondered if he went by another name, then she remembered that Dragan had tracked him several times. So that couldn't be it.
Yeah, I thought that was him alright. Pretty old picture then?
Ofcourse he knew her brother. Why the hell had he gotten himself involved with the Altos?
Uhm, yeah. So where do you know him from?
I met him in China ages ago, when we were looking for Pangus ax. He came with us here to Egypt afterwards, where he met some girl and they took off. Living the good hippie life; travelling around and so. Think he knocked her up or something. Haven't seen him since. Then out of nowwhere he contacted me a few days ago. Met him just yesterday at the market. Smoked some shisha and had something to eat.
He was also a chatty guy it seemed. For some reason, Neda had always assumed that the spooky Altos would be a bit more eerie and greasy to be around.
I've always loved Egypt. I used to go here with my dad when I was a kid. Wow, he also had plans on telling her his entire lifestory clearly. Why did blokes always do that to her? She didn't care. Go away.
Sorry, where are my manners. I'm Bert Alto. Bert jr that would be.
Alto? As in "that" Alto? Neda was done pretending. If the Altos were looking for something here, it was best to get out of here as soon as possible.
Yes, as in that Alto. I'm the son of "the" Bert also, so.... And you might be?
Neda.
Is that so? She immideately realized that he'd recognized the name. Damnit, she hadn't thought about that. This was why sims lied about their names. Maybe Niko hadn't said anything to this bloke.
That's so. So do you know where Niko is now?
I might. He answered, before looking at her again: You're that journalist aren't you? He took another long break before talking again, a bit lower this time: I guess you already know what happens to journalists, that stick their noses where they don't belong?
Neda worried her heart would stop for a second. Had he just threatened her? Holy shit, she'd never been threatend before: I'm familiar with it. Hell if she was sniffing around in this. She just wanted to find her brother; adventures and excitement sucked!
Good. It would be a shame if a skilled journalist like you went missing.
I.... I just want to find my brother really. I... she cleared her throat: I... our... our parents are getting old, and I just want to.... Shit.
He pulled out another grin: In that case, he's up at the skypyramide. It's off limits to most sims. She ignored the obvious hint that he meant that it wasn't off limits to him. You should probably cover up a bit before going there, or you'll burn. And the nights here can be quite cold. Wouldn't want you to freeze if you can't get back here before nightfall.
Was that a threat to? Or was he just making casual conversation?
She swallowed deeply: Thanks for the tip.
Watch out for the crocodiles.
Alright then.
Watching as the moon rose over the water, they found themselves enjoying the silence. It was quickly getting cooler and more livable, but soon they'd have to pull out some blankets and go to sleep.
Six hours, it had taken them nearly six hours of nonstop walking to get this far, and they still weren't at that damned pyramide yet. Maybe Alto had tricked her, but according to the map there was supposed to be a pyramide up ahead.
You know he might not be there right?
I know. Kevin answered, he really did his best to figure out what he felt about anything.
Right now he tried focusing on beeing in the moment; right here in Egypt, infront of a firepit with his aunt that had raised him like he was hers. He'd never really thought about it that way before. Studying her face as the ligth played over it, it dawned on him how young she still was. She must've been really young when she got pregnant the first time. Yet she took him in to.
I'm not trying to take anything away from you, she explained, but you know, the guy could've been wrong. She really hoped he wasn't ofcourse. The good thing though, is that if it's him, and he leaves that pyramide, he had to bump into us on the way because this is the only way that goes to that place.
Kevin nodded, ignoring the lump in his stomach. He wasn't really sure what was going to happen if he met him. He had worried about what would happen of dad didn't want him, but what if he did want him. What if he had to move from Neda and in with him?! Or if he had to live here!! He'd litterally die if that happened!
We should probably go to sleep soon. He said.
Neda nodded: We should. We have to get up around three to avoid the worst heat and if we want to get there at a decent time. It's an oasis near there, and it's pretty high up so it should be cooler that down in the valley.
Kevin still hadn't gotten over that Neda knew how to put up a tent, and light a fire. Turned out she'd been a girlscout as a kid. Who knew?
They both fell asleep a lot easier than they had thought. It was strange how calm one could feel, after a long treck and knowing there were no crocodiles around; neither the ones in the water or Altos.
------------------------------------------------------
I know that Shang Simla doesn't exist, but the surrounding areas are awefully similar to the giza plateau, valley of the kings and abu simbel- I mean it's huge, but it's atleast inspired by it. So technically Cairo would be pretty close by the pyramides. Because you can see them from Cairo. I don't know what I'm trying with this either, just pretend that you can put real things into the game from time to time was my point.
And there's no reason to worry about Bert Alto. It was just a bit fun that the game picked him as a tourist. This is Neda we're talking about, she'd sell her soul to stay away from danger.
